If you are looking to adopt some regenerative techniques or transition your vineyard away from conventional methods, this workshop provides both theoretical and practical instruction about the strategies and tactics of regenerative soil management – reaching beyond the fundamentals into the biological systems of our vineyards.

Some of the key objectives for this workshop are to:

• Identify soil types, their physical properties and the effect of texture and structure on soil fertility
• Master soil analysis techniques including key metrics to benchmark soil health
• Understand the importance of organic matter and pH in how they influence nutrient availability and uptake by plants
• Prepare and practice various methods of carbon sequestration
• Recognise the important role of mycorrhizal fungi in vineyards
• Assess the Cation Exchange Capacity of your soil
• Understand the function and benefits of a soil food web
• Review the ways water moves through the soil and how to avoid soil leaching
• Assess and identify the right cover crops for your vineyard per soil type and condition
• Explore various techniques for weed management
• Discover ways to replenish soil health through composting, mulch and under-vine grazing

This workshop will include a practical session, including the process of digging a soil pit for the purpose of:

• Assessing soil texture and structure (VESS test)
• Counting earthworms
• Conducting slake tests
• Observing rooting depth and penetration
• Observing rhizosheaths

CAMERON ROUCHER

Nuffield Scholar and an experienced vineyard manager, Cameron established a reputation for quality grapegrowing and innovation over the 12.5 years he managed the vineyards at Rathfinny Wine Estate.

Cameron grew up in New Zealand, where he trained in viticulture and learned the tricks of the trade. He recently returned to the Antipodes to work at Cherubino in Western Australia. Cameron returned to the UK this year to bring his skills and experience to a wider audience, working across Vinescapes many clients with a focus on technology, new innovations and the benefits of regenerative viticulture in a changing and variable climate.
