Designing your winery

Setting up for success in the winery takes a lot of planning and know-how.

Journalist Laura Hadland investigated the requirements for designing a winery for Vineyard Magazine, and inquired into the factors which work for a wine business today, and for a wine business which is ready to adapt for growth and change in the future.

Vinescapes CEO, Dr Alistair Nesbitt and our winemaking and viticulture consultant, Sarah Stott spoke to Laura about the key considerations when designing a winery.

Sarah noted how important it was to future-proof the winery. She said, “We often see wineries built for a specific tonnage of fruit, but within a few years, they can outgrow this space and struggle to have sufficient areas for experimental vessels such as larger format barrels, foudres or even clay amphoras, plus all their equipment and wine storage.”

Similarly, Alistair said, “In our work with architects, designers and winery owners, we ensure the technical and operational spaces are clearly defined and have the capacity to respond to changing demonds on the winery and the winery team.”
